Ganga has been signified since time immemorial in Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, historical accounts and literature. Men have been mismerized by its glorified beauty and sanctity. She has been described as 'essence of Vedas'. She has been the symbol of purity and sanctity for Indians and thus a means to get rid of guilt of committing sins, known and/or unknown. This glory has given it worldwide fame. In its religious and philosophical worth, Ganga has been epitome of India. It has also been the lifeline of a vast stretch of land and a huge population.
In this premise polluting River Ganga would mean the loss of India's one of the most priced assets - the loss of its philosophical/theological/socialogical identity. Corrupting this purifier/sanctifier would imply loss of guilt clarifying means, and it will be impossible for the extant lot of psychiatrists and psychiatric institutions to equal the same mass psychiatry that River Ganga performs. Polluting River Ganga would thus also mean endangering the health, both physical and mental, of a population of millions or even half a billion.

It would thus be apt to declare it as 'National River' on par with other national icons - National Flag, National Emblem, National Bird, National Animal, National Flower, etc. - under The Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 12/1950. It is a need of the time to protect River Ganga and in this regard establish a National Commitee or National Taskforce involving scientists, experts and religious leaders.
